How many of you have heard of World Mental Health Day? And how many of you know when it is? There’s a different celebration all-year-round whether it’s nation-based or worldwide. Many of which we’ve lost track of or never even heard of before! World Mental Health Day might be one of those for someone somewhere on earth. So let’s talk about this special day and how we can be part of it.

What is Mental Health

Everyone has a different definition of mental health. I think of mental health as my ability to cope with stress from daily activities and still be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

According to WHO, mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to his or her community.”

When is World Mental Health Day

It falls on the 10th of October each year. This day was first celebrated on the 10th of October, 1992. Two years later, it came with its first theme – Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World. From there on, we started celebrating this International Day with a different topic each year.

The Main Purpose of World Mental Health Day

The original purpose was to promote mental health advocacy and to educate the general public about mental health. Staying true to its original objective, World Mental Health Day continues to raise awareness of mental health worldwide.

Besides sharing what we’ve learned about mental health and what affects it, we also exchange tips and tricks to improving our mental well-being and those around us. Whether it’s at home or at work, mental health should be a priority, not a luxury.
